Background

The ccTLD for Cayman Islands is .ky, managed by the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA). They are an independent authority, responsible for Telecommunications, Broadcasting and radio. They also have many responsibilities under the Electronic Transactions Law 2000.

The registration of a .ky domain name is limited to residents within the Cayman Islands and a local address and phone number must be provided in registration. Any company requiring a domain name must be registered in the Cayman Islands. A contact or local agent cannot be used if you are overseas.

There are various sub-domains which are available beneath the ccTLD .ky. Proof to show that you can register for these domain names must be shown. The sub-domains are as follows:
.edu.ky - Only for education establishments. It is managed by the Permanent Secretary for Education.
.gov.ky - Only for use by Cayman Islands government Departments. It is managed by the Computer Services.

Some rules and criteria must be followed in order to register a domain name under .ky. These are:

  • The only characters that may be used are the Roman Alphabet (a-z).
  • Digits 0-9 can be used.
  • A hyphen (-) is allowed, yet cannot be used at the start or beginning of the domain name. It is also not to be used in the third or fourth place due to the International Domain name's punycode.
  • The domain cannot be used for any pornographic materials, nor may it have any connection with such.
  • The domain cannot be used for any gambling, nor may it have any connection with such.

If your registration is rejected, it may be due to not following any of the rules or criteria. What has been done wrong will be sent via the email address given with the application. If approved, and email will also be sent, including the password used to edit the domain. Most emails will be sent within one working day, occasionally two. Data of approved domain names are submitted into the master database at midnight on the day of approval.

• All second level names of ".vi" are banned from being used as third level names. e.g. "co.co.vi" would be banned as it is a second level name.

• There shall be at least two name servers for the domain operating at the time the request is submitted. These must be reachable on the Internet at the time of application and their IP address location is not important.

The VI REGISTRY is not proactive in acting as arbiter, but will supply all known contact details for a given Domain Name to a third party where a domain name dispute is alleged.

Important: When entering your search string don't write “www” or the Maltan domain type, ie. “org.mt”. Therefore to search “www.101domains.org.mt” enter “101domains” and nothing else.

The only letters allowed within a domain name are: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Spaces are NOT ALLOWED.

Once the domain is registered

All Maltan domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Maltan domains.

Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Maltan domain name registrar.
