Once the domain is registered
All Japanese domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.
It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Japanese domains.
Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Japanese domain name registrar.
Background
The ccTLD, an abbreviation for the Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD), for Japan is .jp. It is managed and administered by the Japan Registry Service.
It was only recently that the Japan Registry Service gained control of the .jp domain name and not too far back, it was managed by the organisation Japan Network Information centre, known as the JPNIC. It was supported by the government ministries, along with ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which organises global domain names. Yet, soon there was a great change and management was to be discussed at meetings to figure out what would be best for the ccTLD. This was due to the great amount of domain names under .jp and the grand scale on which they were used. It wasn't until several meetings that it was finally decided at the 11th General Meeting of JPNIC in December 2000. A new organisation was created a couple of years later in follow up to this meeting and finally assumed the duties on the 30th June 2003.
It is through accredited registrars that registrations can be processed, and if a domain name with Japanese characters is needed, it can be done so on a second level. All types of Japanese characters - kanji, hiragana or katakana - can be used.
The benefits that come from obtaining a .jp domain name are that if you are a business based in Japan, it is great for commercial and advertisement use. It would attract the normal Japanese user. TV commercials or business cards, as examples, would have a greater impact as a .jp than as a .com.
Although you cannot register a .jp domain name if you are not based in Japan, we can supply Japanese contact that allow you to register a .jp domain name with us.
