Once the domain is registered

All South Korean domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for South Korean domains.

Background

The Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain name (ccTLD) for South Korea (Republic of Korea) is .kr. It is managed by the National Internet Development Agency (NIDA) even though registrations are passed through registration agents.

The main roles of NIDA are to establish a customer-oriented service system, receive new demands for .kr domains, manage the .kr domain registrars and provide the necessary support that will guarantee a stable domain name registration service. They also wish to assist the secretariat of the Internet Address Policy Committee, improve management by expanding NIDA's database and to enhance the policies and systems which will lead to more competitive .kr domains.

The domain name .kr can be seen as very attractive due to the claims Korea makes to having the world's best Internet infrastructure.. Due to this, many aspects of Korean society is dictated by the Internet, and incredible 31 million (being 70%) of the population using it. 12 million households, through broadband, are connected to the Internet.

It had been possible, from September 2006, to register a domain name directly beneath .kr, even though it is only possible for internationalised domain names. Trademark holders. Domain names are given out on a 'first come first served' basis.

Available second-level domains under the domain name .kr are as follows:

  • .co.kr : Use by Companies, Organisations and/or Individuals.
  • .go.kr : Use by Korean Governmental Authorities.
  • .ne.kr : Use by Organisations, Companies and/or Individuals which offer a network service on a profit or non-profit basis.
  • .or.kr : Use by Non-profit Companies, Organisations, individuals, associations, foundations, Institutions and/or other incorporated bodies.
  • .pe.kr : For personal use by any Korean Individual.
  • .re.kr : Use by Organisations, Companies and/or Individuals that are conducting Research.

The following terms must be followed before registering for a .kr domain name:

  • Registrants must meet with the criteria necessary when applying for a second-level domain name.
  • Registrants need to have a postal address within Korea.
