101 Domains Domain Information Update ".bg" domains.

European domains: Bulgarian (.bg)

Important: When entering your search string don't write “www” or the Bulgarian domain type, ie. “bg”. Therefore to search “www.101domains.bg” enter “101domains” and nothing else.

The only letters allowed within a domain name are: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Spaces are NOT ALLOWED.

Once the domain is registered

All Bulgarian domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Bulgarian domains.

Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Bulgarian domain name registrar.

Background

.bg is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bulgaria. The domain was first established in 1995 and is administered by Register.BG.

The .bg domain is only available for registration within Bulgaria and registrations from outside of the country are restricted. The domain is only available to citizens of Bulgaria and companies based and operated within the country. The domain name registered must represent the company name or its abbreviation. To get around this restriction, some Bulgarian companies register the name they wish to use as a trademark. This is common practice as trademarks are eligible to be used as .bg domain names.

Until mid 2006, local companies considered registering a .bg domain very expensive and many opted to use .com, .org and .net domains as a cheaper alternative. The high costs incurred were due to the stringent procedures put in place regarding documentation needed for new registrations.

Register.BG introduced new measures in August 2008 that made the registration process much easier. Without as many regulations and restrictions, the process became a much cheaper and viable option for people wanting to register a Bulgarian domain name.

In September 2006, a variety of new domain names under the .bg top-level were introduced. These domains are primarily aimed at individuals for private use.

Register.BG introduced a new method of registering domains on 5th September 2009. As of this date, Internationalized Domain Names can be registered using letters from the Cyrillic alphabet rather than the English alphabet. Domain names registered this way must only consist of characters found in the Cyrillic alphabet and need to feature at least one character that can be visually distinguished from the Latin alphabet.
