Background

.td is the country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Chad, officially known as the Republic of Chad, a landlocked country in central Africa. It is sometimes known as "The Dead Heart of Africa" due to its distance from the sea and its largely desert climate. Chad's official languages are Arabic and French.

At 1,284,000 square kilometres, Chad is the 21st largest country in the world, only slightly larger than South Africa, and only slightly smaller than Peru. The country is found in north central Africa. It also has a rich cultural heritage, which the government actively promotes through such things as the Chad National Museum and the Chad Cultural Centre. The country is divided into three geographical zones: there is the desert region to the north, the Sahelian belt in the centre and the savannah to the south. There is also Lake Chad, which the country has been named after. It is the largest wetlands in Chad, and the second largest in Africa.

The majority of residents (around 80%) relies of agriculture for their living, through subsistence farming and livestock raising, which is all determined by local climate. However, cotton remains to be a primary export, but despite this the cotton industry has suffered from a decline in world cotton prices.

Chad has more than 200 distinct ethnic groups. This brings in a large array of languages, though the main languages are French and Arabic.

The .td domain name was introduced to Chad in 1997. It is operated and sponsored by the Société des Télécommunications du Tchad. Registrations for the .td domain name is done directly at a second-level, and its intended use is for entities connected with Chad. However, the domain does not find much use.
