Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Tuvaluan domain name registrar.

Background

.tv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the island nation of Tuvalu.

Except for reserved names like ".com.tv", ".net.tv", ".org.tv" and others, any person in the world can register a ".tv" domain for a fee. The domain name is popular (and thus economically valuable) because it is an abbreviation of the word 'television' (other similar ccTLDs are .me, .fm, .am, .cd, .dj and .mu). Such unconventional usage of TLDs in domain names are known as domain hacks. The domain is currently operated by dotTV, a VeriSign company; the Tuvalu government owns twenty percent of the company. In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name ".tv" for $50 million in royalties over a 12-year period. The Tuvalu government receives a quarterly payment of US$1 million for use of the top-level domain.

On December 14, 2006, VeriSign announced an alliance with Demand Media, run by ex-MySpace chairman Richard Rosenblatt to market the ".tv" Top Level Domain Name (TLD) as the preferred web address for rich media content. VeriSign Naming Services is the largest domain name registry in the world, managing over 70 million digital identities in over 350 languages. They process an average of 30 billion ".com" and ".net" queries per day and they deliver about 4,5 million mobilephone transactions per day. (pictures, signals etc.) It's a global network whos Domain Name System (DNS) has maintained an operational accuracy and stability for 100 percent of the time for more than eight years. Today VeriSign has around 500,000 certificates installed throughout the world, this means that they protect more secure Web sites on the Internet than any other company. For instance they have about 93% of the Fortune 500 sites!

Today ".tv" is marketed as any other 'top-level domain', say ".com" or ".net". VeriSign wants to market ".tv" towards all communication channels avaliable e.g. TV, Radio, Movies. ".tv" means exciting engaging content hence major broadcast networks, leading music publishers, and savvy businesses are all taking advantage of ".tv" domain names to create new revenue streams for their businesses.

A few simple rules regarding the ".tv" domain:

• Minimum Term: 1 Year

• Maximum Term: 10 Years

• Domain name length: 63 characters excluding the dot (.)

• Minimum Domain name length: 1 character

• A domain name must not start with a dash (-) or dot (.) or must not start with the following sequence "alphanumeric_alphanumeric_dash_dash". (Note: This is allowed when it is an International Domain Name which has the PUNYCODE prefix of "XN--")

• Each character in the domain name excluding the dots (.) must be a letter or digit or dash (-)

• The last character must be a digit or a letter. It cannot be a dash (-).

• A domain cannot have more than 13 hosts

• Fulfillment is 1-2 hours. When a successful response is received, the name is registered. To sum it all upp a Web address that ends with ".tv" gives the impression that a site contains a vibrant rich-media experience and since ".tv" is so memorable consumers will have an easier time remembering the specific domain name.
