101 Domains Domain Information Update ".fi" domains.

Important: When entering your search string don't write “www” or the Finnish domain type, ie. “fi”. Therefore to search “www.101domains.fi” enter “101domains” and nothing else.

The only letters allowed within a domain name are: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Spaces are NOT ALLOWED.

Once the domain is registered

All Finnish domain names registered with us are stored on our international server. Domains registered with us are automatically provided with their own under-construction page - this notifies potential registrants that the name has been acquired and is now registered. The under-construction page is offered free of charge and may be used indefinitely.

It is possible for Web and/or Mail forwarding to be provided for Finnish domains.

Domain transfer/release fees are charged are by a majority of registrars, but 101 Domains make no charge to transfer a domain to another Finnish domain name registrar.

Background

.fi is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Finland.

The ccTLD for Finland, an abbreviation for Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain, is .fi. It is managed by FICORA who are the finnish Communications regulatory Authority. On December 4, 1986, the Finnish Inix Users Group from Tampere sent a request to register a top-level domain name for Finland. This was granted and the Tampere University of Technology took responsibility for the .fi TLD. This management was later transferred from FICIX to FICORA.

Domain names were previously regulated on a very strict basic and registrations were only accepted if the registrations were from company names or companies which owned trademarks. This changed in 2003 due to many Finnish companies turning to other top-level domains and this had to be changed. A well known website using the .fi domain name was anon.penet.fi which was known as the Penet Remailer. It was a privately operated server which allowed its users to post e-mail and Usenet messages. :1986

If your domain name is based off the name of a person, it must be done by a person of the same name. You cannot use the domain name of other companies.

Since 2006, private persons have also been allowed to apply for domain names. Restrictions still apply as there are certain rules that must be revised before picking a domain name. These are as follows:

  • Characters from the Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used, along with the Arabic digits (0-9).
  • Characters from the native language in Finland are acceptable.
  • Hyphens (-) can be placed in the domain name but they cannot be at the beginning or end. Two hyphens cannot be placed in a row (--).
  • The minimum length of a domain name is 2 characters.
  • The maximum length is 63 characters. For practical reasons, it is not recommended to make it this long.
  • The domain name cannot be trademarked. If you want to check and make sure your domain name is suitable, there are many free public registers which you can check.

There are currently over 200,000 registered .fi domain names. It is now possible to register domains for up to five years. The waiting period after termination of the domain name is only one month.
